As part of our participation in new projects we now have positions for several postdoctoral positions

Application Procedure

All applications are due by 1700 on 6 March 2018. Please send a single PDF document that includes: (1) covering letter (2) CV which includes details of 3 contactable referees and a detailed publication list. Applications should be sent to Dr Stuart Ali (stuart.ali@wits.ac.za) making it clear which of the postdoctoral positions below you are applying for.

More information about the positions is provided below, with separate contact information for informal enquiries.

Projects

Structural Bioinformatics/Pharmacogenomics

Together with GSK's Africa Open NCD Lab, we are studying variations in the ADME genes in African populations, using novel high-coverage sequence data generated by projects in the Human Hereditiy and Health in Africa consortium (H3A). We will identify variations of possible interest for pharmacogenomics. The postdoctoral fellow we appoint will primarily be responsible for the _in silico_ modelling of these variations. The successful candidate will have strong expertise in structural bioinformatics. More details can be found at http://www.bioinf.wits.ac.za/adme-project.html

Cancer Genomics

The ERICA-SA research program on Evolving Risk factors for Cancers in African populations is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow in Biostatistics to work on genome-wide association studies for three common cancers in the South African population using genotype data from the H3 Africa GWAS SNP array. The project is supported by the South African Medical Research Council and the UK Newton fund. The postdoc will lead the analysis with the help of PhD students, and must have knowledge and experience of analysing large genetic data sets. More details can be found at http://www.bioinf.wits.ac.za/jobs/ericasa.pdf

Precision Medicine Initiative

Our new platform will identify molecular biomarkers and genetic variants linked to type 1 diabetes, and translate these findings into an Africa-appropriate genetic test using Oxford Nanopore technology. We are looking for two postdoctoral fellows who will bridge the gap between the lab and the clinic through the development of new software tools that will relate medical and genetic data to disease risk and outcome. More details can be found at http://www.bioinf.wits.ac.za/jobs/precisionmed.html

DST/NRF SARChI in Populations

Professor Michele Ramsay, DST/NRF Research Chair for Genomics and Bioinformatics of African Populations and Professor of Human Genetics at Wits wishes to recruit postdoctoral fellows to study large African genome datasets (GWAS and WGS) to examine population structure and genome architecture, in addition to associations with cardiometabolic traits (includi ng obesity, fasting glucose, insulin and lipid profiles with demographic, health history and behavioural data). The successful candidate needs strong bioinformatics background.
