Introduction to the Linux Command Line

- Prerequisite: basic computer literacy
Course description
Although graphical user interfaces (GUI) are a powerful, intuitive
and flexible way of using computers, some advanced activities are
difficult or inconvenient to do with a GUI. The command line interface
(CLI) provides increased power and flexibility to complement the use
of the GUI. Many bioinformatics activities are made much easier with the CLI.
This short course gives a brief introduction to the command line interface that is used
by Linux, MacOS and other Unix style systems.
- Introduction to GNU/Linux and bash
- Using and accessing the file system (including directory and file management)
- Running jobs and process control
- Pipes and redirection
- Setting and querying environment variables
- Key shell and command line commands including tar/zip/grep/cut
- Brief introductionto virtualisation.
